Do you know what to buy your writer friend for Christmas?
Or are you stuck for ideas?
I can help 🙂
I recently blogged about How to Romance a Romance Writer, and that included all kinds of handy hints about what NOT to buy. So now, let me give you some great suggestions for making your tame romance writer a very happy person.

To read, perchance to dream
When we’re not writing (or editing, promoting, or scouring Facebook / Pinterest / Instagram for inspiration), we like to read. Books are a safe bet. Whether it’s cookery books, glossy travel guides or the latest thriller, chances are we’ll be delighted.
Book vouchers / giftcards work just as well.

For reference
There are a gazillion How-To books on the market, giving advice on everything from polishing penguins to taming reindeer. Some people swear by them, but I’ve got a better suggestion. The Emotion Thesaurus: A Writer’s Guide to Character Expression.
I use my copy more than any other reference book. It’s so EASY to use.

In Emergency, break out the wine
This looks cool and fun, while having a purpose: the Writer Emergency Pack. Idea cards, detail cards and help to get you moving again when you’re stuck.

Did I mention wine? * nods head *
Wine, great coffee, or even better, a little hamper of delicious snacks, ideal for late night keyboard pounding. These are handmade truffles from TroolyScrumshuss: https://www.facebook.com/search/top/?q=trooly%20scrumshuss

A mini desk
I do most of my late-night-keyboard-pounding while I’m in bed. Maybe my muse is a night owl? Anyway, I have a fab wooden lap-desk that folds away when not in use. A built-in USB-driven fan gets bonus points.
Here’s a selection of alternatives: http://mashable.com/2010/11/16/best-lap-desks/#cHnz5pXs0kqs

If music be the food of love
From my unscientific research, I deduce that more writers listen to music while working, than not. Buying comfortable headphones / earbuds will get you brownie points for sure.
-
The pen is mightier than the mouse
For all my electronic gizmos, there are times when only a pen & paper will do the trick. Maybe because the words are refusing to flow, or I’m sitting in blazing sunlight and my laptop screen is all but unreadable. Buy a lovely notebook and a couple of exotic pens, and your writer friend will love you forever.
Note my suggestion for ‘exotic’ pens. Bonus points for an ink colour other than boring black or blue.

Customised Vouchers
I don’t mean Amazon / Apple / B&N giftcards where you choose the value and select an image for the front of the card. I mean Customised. From YOU. To the writer. How about handwritten vouchers, to be cashed in when the writer chooses? Options might include:
- a neck massage
- coffee / tea in bed every morning for a week
- cooking dinner
- going to the store for wine / chocolate / ice cream, as required
- keeping the kids occupied for an entire afternoon / day / evening, without needing your help
Have fun, and Merry Christmas 🙂
